With the NI Academic Site License DVDs, one installation gives you access to nearly all products in NI Academic Site License. Install modules and toolkits from the DVDs to ensure compatibility with the version of LabVIEW included in this release.

Installing, Evaluating, and Activating NI Academic Site License

Complete the following steps to install products on the NI Academic Site License DVDs:

Insert NI Academic Site License Software DVD 1.
Select the products you want to install. Select Install to minimize your interaction during installation.
Enter the serial number or leave the field blank for a temporary trial. Locate the serial number on the Certificate of Ownership, the product packing slip, or the shipping label, depending on your purchase. If you are upgrading, you can use your existing NI Academic Site License serial number. Begin installation.
Follow the instructions on your screen.
Activate when prompted.

Save the media in order to modify or repair your installation, or to distribute NI software with your custom-built installers.

Refer to the NI Academic Site License printed documentation for additional activation instructions and a complete list of modules and toolkits available in the NI Academic Site License core software and additional software options.

Mac Support for NI Driver and Application Software

Some NI software and driver products do not currently support Mac OS X 10.7, and will not install and/or function on machines running this operating system. For more information on this issue, go to ni.com/info and enter the Info Code NIMacLion. For information on LabVIEW Mac support, refer to the LabVIEW Release Notes.

Documentation Changes

The NI Academic Site License Control and Embedded Systems option is shipping with the LabVIEW 2012 Statechart Module and not 2012 SP1 as indicated on the NI Academic Site License Release Notes.

64-bit Versions of NI LabVIEW and NI Vision

64-bit versions of NI LabVIEW and NI Vision software are available for download or upon request. To request copies of these software packages, visit ni.com/info and enter the Info Code lv64bit.

LabVIEW MathScript RT Module for Mac OS X or Linux

To request a version that runs on Mac OS X or Linux, visit ni.com/info and enter the Info Code ASLMathScript.

Automating the Installation of NI Products

You can automate the installation of most NI products using command-line arguments to suppress some or all of the installer user interface and dialog boxes. However, starting with the August 2012 releases (products using NI Installers version 3.1 or later), you may need to perform additional steps before or during a silent installation of NI software.

If the NI product you are installing uses Microsoft .NET 4.0, the .NET installer may run before any NI software installs and may require a reboot before the installation of NI software begins. To avoid a .NET reboot, install .NET 4.0 separately before you install NI software.

How to Use NI Software with Microsoft Windows 8

When you install National Instruments software on Microsoft Windows 8, you will notice a few additional tiles on the Start screen, including shortcuts to NI application software products such as NI LabVIEW, Measurement & Automation Explorer (MAX), and the new NI Launcher.

Using NI Launcher

NI Launcher helps you find and launch installed NI products. It provides you with a method of finding NI products similar to the Start menu in previous versions of Microsoft Windows. To use NI Launcher, click the NI Launcher tile on the Start screen. NI Launcher launches the desktop and opens a menu containing a list of NI products. Click any NI product to launch it.

Note Unlike previous versions of Microsoft Windows, MAX does not appear as a desktop shortcut. You can launch MAX either from the Start screen or from within NI Launcher.

Pinning Frequently Used Applications

For convenience, you can pin your most-used NI applications, such as MAX, to either the Start screen or the Taskbar on the desktop, as necessary:
